The Lao Biogas Pilot Program (BPP)

A joint venture program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV).

The goal:

To improve the livelihood and quality of life of rural families , men and women, and reduce the impact of biomass resource depletion in Lao PDR through exploiting the market and non-market benefits of domestic biogas digesters.

The purpose:

To establish a biogas series of biogas pilot activities to form of a basic of a future larger scale biogas program that will establish a commercially viable domestic biogas sector.

The BPP aims to reduce poverty and improve the livelihood of rural households in the Lao PDR. It does this by creating a commercial and sustainable market sector for domestic biogas technology. This technology provides a wide range of benefits for rural households and momminities.

The program is being implemented by the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, with support from SNV Netherlands Development Organization, and with funding from the Government of the Netherlands.

What is Biogas?

Domestic biogas Degesters provides modern, convenient and healthy energy in the form of natural gas for cooking and lighting. They offer a safe and hygienic way to dispose of animal and human waste, and one by-product is a safe and powerful organic fertilizer that can boost crop yields and household income.

This simple technology has no moving parts and is robust -designed to last 15 years. It is built mainly from materials that can be obtained in local markets in rural Laos and using local unskilled and skilled labour.

Domestic biogas systems are weel-proven with over 20 million households systems installed around the world and over 2 million more being built each year.
